Shadow Bay Park, Florida

Today's adventure included birding at Shadow Bay Park where we were greeted by a Limpkin which is a life bird for both of us.  Since it didn't hang around for any decent pictures we decided to try and search it out without any success.  This Eastern Towhee (left) we found was a life bird for Bernie.  We also found this Brown Thrasher and a Horace's Dustywing Butterfly.  We also saw our first alligator.

Trumpet Vine

I am quite surprised at all of the vegetation on the island.  I expected it to be more like the 7 mile island of the Wildwoods near where I live but there are many areas here with heavy vegetation.  There is a lot of trumpet vine which attracts the hummingbirds.  Yesterday I saw 2 Ruby-throated Hummingbirds fighting over territory.  I saw Mockingbirds, Cardinals, Brown Thrashers and Robins all in the yard along with some Sparrows.

Birding - Higbee Beach

For me it was another glorious fall day with moderate temperatures and lots of birds to make me happy.  I have been away or busy most of the past month so I haven't had much of a chance to go birding.  Higbee Beach has been busy with migrating birds so I decided I'd start my day there.  Lots of Yellow-rumped Warblers, White-throated Sparrows, Goldfinches, Pine Siskins, Eastern Phoebes, Ruby and Golden-crowned Kinglets, Flickers, Red-bellied Woodpeckers, Cardinals, Blue Jays were feeding.  A highlight of the day was seeing several Brown Thrashers.  There were kettles of  hawks flying overhead along with the single hawks that were trying to pick off a meal.
