Bernie & I had fun driving the back byways of the Cameron County today where we came across quite a number of hawks, falcons & Crested Caracara's.

My Yard ~ European Starlings versus Cooper's Hawk

There is always a lead European Starlings looking out for any predators that might come through to grab them.  None seen at that time but the next day the feeders were quiet as this Cooper's Hawk sat in the middle garden waiting for some lunch.  Today, he had no lunch in my yard.

Afternoons are spent up at the pool as this years temperatures have been anywhere from about 98 to 105F.  Usually at some point during the afternoon I take a break from the pool and go off in search of birds and nature to photograph.  It's a photographers delight here especially as there are good numbers of hummingbirds - both Costa's and Anna's.  The surprise of this afternoon was the Cooper's Hawk that landed along the railing of the pool area.  Later this evening he was out hunting birds for his dinner.

Today's early morning walk was exciting! As I came out of the room there was a Cooper's Hawk sitting over on the fence and I was able to get a quick picture before the hawk flew off as I startled him. Then I went around the corner and saw a Greater Roadrunner chick jump into a bush, grab a bug and jump down onto the sidewalk again. Then the chick didn't seem to know how to get the bug broken into smaller pieces so he could eat it. What fun to watch him figure it out! On my walk I also saw 2 more life birds - Berwick's Wren and Gambel's Quail.
