Cape May Point Birding

 Great to get out early this morning to bird at several productive spots in the Point.  First stop, was the jetty at Alexander Avenue where I saw several Brown Pelicans, lots of different species of gulls, some Double-crested Cormorants, many Yellow-rumped warblers and many Golden-crowned kinglets.  Next stop was Northwood Center.  Then I headed over to the beach and the trees along Harvard Avenue.  I had a great time.

I was excited to see this Red-breasted Nuthatch at the peanut feeder that I had bought for the Blue Jays.  The nuthatch has a long sharp beak that was no match for the peanut shell.  It was so awesome to watch,

44th Street Rookery - Avalon

I love when spring starts and the herons return to the rookery on 44th Street.  I feel like spring migration is really going to start.  There were about 15 Yellow-crowned Night Herons along with 6 Black-crowned Night Herons.  As a great added surprise there were also 6 Red-breasted Nuthatches working the trees along the sidewalk.

Today's adventure was to look for Purple Sandpipers on the Second Street jetty and Crossbills anywhere along the dunes of the Point.  No success on either of those birds but did have a large flock of Red-breasted Nuthatches feeding along the dunes by St Mary's along with a single Monarch. Also saw some Dark-eyed Junco's feeding along the dunes plus kettles of vultures overhead.  On the Alexandria Street beach were
some Sanderlings and Ruddy Turnstones.

Backyard Birds - My yard

Yesterday, I was sitting enjoying the views in my backyard when I spotted a new backyard bird - a White-throated Sparrow.  This morning I saw another group of birds that included more White-throated Sparrows, some Song Sparrows and some House Finches.  Then later, I was invaded by Cow-headed Cowbirds which happen to be another new yard bird.  The cowbird is one I'd rather have saty away.

I never did get any pictures of the White-throated Sparrows because they jump around lots. Other yard birds today included Blue Jays, Cardinals, Tufted Titmice, Mourning Doves, and several Red-breasted Nuthatch. The nuthatches were collecting sunflower seeds and burying them under the bark of the cherry tree. This activity went on for about 1/2hr and was reallly fun to watch.
