My Yard ~ Recent Butterflies

 Seen in my yard. Past few sunny days of low winds & temps 78-82 degrees has kept the butterflies going. 11 species of butterflies still flying including a Monarch, several Common-checkered, several Pearl Crescents and more. ID's below the pictures.

Beth's Patch ~ What a Start to Labor Day Weekend

It's been an exciting start to the Labor Day weekend. I was outside at about 6:45 AM, only to see birds streaming north over the yard by the hundreds. What a cool spectacle! Some birds stopped by for a brief break in my cherry tree, the back yard or the neighbor's magic elm tree. Flocks of American Redstarts, Northern Parulas, Cedar Waxwings and so much more were on the wing. Didn't even get over to Higbee Beach.

The magic continued throughout the day with the FOY Long-tailed Skipper and Common-checkered Skipper's arriving. There were an additional 20 species of butterflies seen. Also seen hunting butterflies, moths and caterpillars were a group of Common Yellowthroat. (birds - not so happy about that part). About 6 Ruby-throated Hummingbirds and 2 Hummingbird Moths finished out the day.

Garrett Family Preserve @ Cape Island Creek

There is a newly opened wildlife area in Lower Twp.  The area covers 180 acres along the Cape Island Creek and encompasses a number of different habitats for birds.  It is also a great area for butterflies.  I recently met a friend there and we walked part of the property.  While walking I saw many Common Buckeyes and lots of Orange Sulphurs.  After she left I continued walking the perimeter trail.  I found a set of 4 arbors, a bird blind that overlooks both the marsh and an Osprey platform and all 3 of the artist easels that are set up around the property.  Along the green trail I found a field of yellow flowers that were filled with many Monarchs, Sulphurs of various species, Buckeyes and other butterflies and bees.  I look forward to going back again soon.
