Nottingham County Park ~ Birds, Butterflies and Other Bugs

Had a great afternoon visit to Nottingham County Park, Chester County, PA yesterday. There were 5 different Snowberry Clearwing Moths on the butterfly bush with lots of skippers.

There were numerous butterflies in the park including a Zebra Swallowtail that didn't sit still for pictures and some type of another swallowtail that was black and blew by me on one of the trails.

Visit to Wolf's Hollow County Park

Yesterday, I decided to take a ride over to Wolf's Hollow County park to see what might be happening in relations to their plants and the fields where I saw so many butterflies last summer. I have been over several times since April but hadn't seen much. This time the Common Milkweed down the path was blooming so there were some butterflies and also some bugs. Next, I walked for about 2 hours on several paths. There was a little stream where there were some cool dragonflies named Ebony Jewelwing. I was able to take a good amount of pictures and uploaded about 50 of them to iNaturalist.

National Pollinator Week ~ Nottingham County Park

Both yesterday and then, again, this afternoon, I went over to Nottingham County Park to look for pollinators. I was thrilled yesterday afternoon to see more Great Spangled Fritillaries than I had seen earlier in the day at Peacedale Preserve. Then, today there were at least 30-50 Great Spangled Fritillaries right near the parking lot on the common milkweed. It was exciting for me. Also, there were skippers, bumble bees and other pollinators there. I will return multiple times this summer to see the wildlife including the birds.

Chester County, PA ~ Wolf's Hollow County Park

Another good visit to Wolf's Hollow Chester County Park. Much of the nectar is drying up and dying back at this point including the Joe Pye Weed and the fields of red clover so there were not as many butterflies flying as my last visit on 8/5/22. Last time, I estimated several hundred Eastern Tiger Swallowtails flying whereas today there were probably around 75-100 seen. That's still an amazing number of them to me. It's someplace I'd like to visit weekly next year as there is a potential for so many species here. I haven't walked any of the woods area where there could be species seen also. I did see my first Fiery Skipper of the season here. Sure wish it had been in my yard but hopefully, one will come visiting. I also saw Summer Azure, Common Buckeye, Variegated Fritillary, Cabbage White, Clouded Skipper, Black Swallowtail and Horace's Duskywing for a 21 species day. Plus the 4 to 6 Snowberry Clearwing Hummingbird moths I saw on the verbena. Again today, I only walked about 1/4 of the trail around the meadow.

Large stand of verbena bonariensis saw many skippers, hummingbird moths and butterflies nectaring on it. Thinking that this might be great for my yard as I tend to place mine between other plantings.
