Nottingham County Park ~ Butterflies'

I drove to I drove to Nottingham County Park this afternoon. It's a great place to walk but I was interested in seeing if the Great Spangled Fritillary's were around yet. I saw 5 of them today. I saw a total of 8 species of butterflies including 2 Monarch's! It's a start, though very little is blooming yet. I, actually, only stayed around the parking lot and not for long as the bugs were out & biting. this afternoon. Atglen, PA ~ Wolf's Hollow County Park

At Wolf's Hollow in Atglen yesterday, I saw 14 species of butterflies. Here are images of some of them. Best butterflies were Ocola & Fiery, both southern strays. I can't find any other records of Ocola being seen there. It was sunny, low to mid 80's with winds 5-8 MPH. So nice to see after a week of drab, rainy weather.

My Yard ~ Giant Swallowtail

Wow, wow, Wow! I am excited! My eyes spied a worn Eastern Giant Swallowtail this afternoon while I was out working in the garden. I ran inside to get my camera. It's still here and is a female. I have rue, so it would be great if she's fertile and lays some eggs. New yard butterfly #36 and #31st species for 2023.

Walking A County Park for Butterflies

Great walk yesterday at one of the parks. 16 species of butterflies. Egg laying Eastern-tailed Blue, butterflies puddling on and near scat. Temperatures not overly hot and I remembered to spray my clothes with bug spray. It was a win!

Visit to Wolf's Hollow County Park

Yesterday, I decided to take a ride over to Wolf's Hollow County park to see what might be happening in relations to their plants and the fields where I saw so many butterflies last summer. I have been over several times since April but hadn't seen much. This time the Common Milkweed down the path was blooming so there were some butterflies and also some bugs. Next, I walked for about 2 hours on several paths. There was a little stream where there were some cool dragonflies named Ebony Jewelwing. I was able to take a good amount of pictures and uploaded about 50 of them to iNaturalist.

Chester County, PA ~ Wolf's Hollow County Park

Another good visit to Wolf's Hollow Chester County Park. Much of the nectar is drying up and dying back at this point including the Joe Pye Weed and the fields of red clover so there were not as many butterflies flying as my last visit on 8/5/22. Last time, I estimated several hundred Eastern Tiger Swallowtails flying whereas today there were probably around 75-100 seen. That's still an amazing number of them to me. It's someplace I'd like to visit weekly next year as there is a potential for so many species here. I haven't walked any of the woods area where there could be species seen also. I did see my first Fiery Skipper of the season here. Sure wish it had been in my yard but hopefully, one will come visiting. I also saw Summer Azure, Common Buckeye, Variegated Fritillary, Cabbage White, Clouded Skipper, Black Swallowtail and Horace's Duskywing for a 21 species day. Plus the 4 to 6 Snowberry Clearwing Hummingbird moths I saw on the verbena. Again today, I only walked about 1/4 of the trail around the meadow.

Large stand of verbena bonariensis saw many skippers, hummingbird moths and butterflies nectaring on it. Thinking that this might be great for my yard as I tend to place mine between other plantings.
