Avalon ~ 8th Street Jetty

It's been about 2 years since I have been to the jetty. Initially, it was just too dangerous after a storm that undermined all of the boulders and washed away the cement holding them together.  I walked out to the end one day and tripped holding both my bins and my camera with telephoto lens.  As I laid there, sans cell phone, that was on the table at home, I wondered if I'd be able to walk off the jetty.  About a year ago in the late spring I decided to chance it only to find the Corp of Engineers there making repairs on the jetty.  They have done a good job.

When I went it was about 2 hours until high tide.  I found that even then the ocean is starting to crash onto the jetty.  Note to self was to come mid tide with the tide going out for better looks at the birds.  I as disappointed to see only 1 Common loon, a single Sanderling, and a dozen Long-tailed Ducks plus a bird that I wasn't sure what it was so I got pictures.  Turned out to be a Dovekie.  They are birds that winter on the open ocean far offshore so I am not sure what it was doing so close.  Hopefully, it was ok and just resting.

The Dovekie, while not a lifer, is really the first time I have seen it except in 2012 with distant views through a scope.
