Beth's Patch ~ Snowing

Snowing here right now.  Will we get much?  Will I be able to do some snow-dyeing?  Only time will tell!  In the meantime, enjoy the flower of the summer.

Camaco Quilters January Challenge

My January Camaco Quilt Guild challenge is finished in just 5 days including quilting and binding. The challenge was to take the leftover fabric from a project you had used and use those leftovers to make another project. I made 2 simple quilts about 44" by 55". For the first project I picked a purple fabric I was gifted years ago when a friend was moving. It's a Laurel Burch and features cats. Pattern was an alternating rectangle block quilt which after making, I had just eight 6.5" squares left. I decided I'd make a Streak of Lightening quilt which used 7 of the squares. After I was done my sister reminded me she also used some of the fabric to make 2 masks. I have one 6.5" square left and am thinking about ideas to use it.

Avalon ~ 8th Street Jetty

It's been about 2 years since I have been to the jetty. Initially, it was just too dangerous after a storm that undermined all of the boulders and washed away the cement holding them together.  I walked out to the end one day and tripped holding both my bins and my camera with telephoto lens.  As I laid there, sans cell phone, that was on the table at home, I wondered if I'd be able to walk off the jetty.  About a year ago in the late spring I decided to chance it only to find the Corp of Engineers there making repairs on the jetty.  They have done a good job.

When I went it was about 2 hours until high tide.  I found that even then the ocean is starting to crash onto the jetty.  Note to self was to come mid tide with the tide going out for better looks at the birds.  I as disappointed to see only 1 Common loon, a single Sanderling, and a dozen Long-tailed Ducks plus a bird that I wasn't sure what it was so I got pictures.  Turned out to be a Dovekie.  They are birds that winter on the open ocean far offshore so I am not sure what it was doing so close.  Hopefully, it was ok and just resting.

The Dovekie, while not a lifer, is really the first time I have seen it except in 2012 with distant views through a scope.

Beth's Patch ~ Ruby-throated Hummingbird ~ Day 51

Seeing my little fellow every few hours every day that it's been nice.  He looks healthy and feeds well.  Changing the nectar out about every 4th day and keeping it unfrozen.

Beth's Patch ~ Ruby-throated Hummingbird ~ Day 45

This male Ruby-throated Hummingbird has been here in the yard for 45 days.  Keeping his nectar from freezing and hoping he makes it through the winter so he can fly off next spring back to his breeding grounds.

He loves to hang out on his branch in the honeysuckle trellis.
