The Weta filled the job of the rodent before land mammals came to New Zealand though their diet is quite different. Their age is estimated to be 190,000,000. To the left is a Weta House found in many forests in NZ. Below pictured are Giant Weta that were brought back from the brink of extinction with successful breeding and releasing programs. We were lucky enough to see the Giant Weta on Tiritiri Matangi Island.
