Donation Quilts ~ Quilts of Valor

 I started working on a donation quilt for Quilts of Valor for my local quilting guild, Calico Cutters.  they supplied the kit, I am to make the top and then return it so borders and the quilting can be done on it.

Then, after I got finished with this top, which took a few days, I decided to cut out another top and make it for them also.  on this one I'll put the borders on and then take it back to be quilted as I believe it's a little large for me to quilt on my Bernina 880.  It'll be twin sized and while it'll fit through the sewing machine I am not sure of my ability to wrangle it around.

 On the eve of Memorial Day weekend, I was pleased to hear that a quilt I'd made was given this week to a veteran to honor their service to our country. It's an honor to make quilts for veterans of all branches of our service with Quilts of Valor. I do recognize that Memorial Day honors those brave veterans who died serving our country.

I have been busy sewing up a storm piecing together quilt tops for Quilts of Valor this month.  I have pieced 5 and also pieced some 9 patch blocks the organization is asking for this year for their block raffle.  The blocks with the panels were done as a challenge.  We were given the panel and needed to use it in a top.  I designed the top though not really much designing there.  Then I copied the first using the same layout for the second top.  Here are 3 of the tops and some of the blocks I made with leftover pieces.

Quilts of Valor

Today, I handed in 3 more quilt tops for Quilts of Valor.  Now they'll go onto a longarm quilter to be quilted.  I also brought home fabric to cut and piece for 3 more plus a challenge that consists of  quilt panel and a yard of fabric.  Guess I'll be playing in my quilting space again soon.

Earlier in the month I made 4 tops for the veterans with Quilts of Valor. Here's one of the tops. Not always what I'd chose for fabric, the tops are made from kits that are put together ahead of the sewing days.  This is donation quilt #24 for 2019.

Last week I attended the Quilts of Valor work day at the ferry.  I had an afternoon appt so wasn't able to stay and get any work done there but brought home 3 kits to sew up quilt tops.  I ran out of one fabric for a top and needed to substitute about 1/4 yard from my stash.  Turned out OK and I don't think anyone will even notice it.  Then I had enough fabric left to make 19 more blocks to make a second Stepped Up Squares top just needing a blue and then a red border fabric.  I used 2 well-aged fabrics from my stash to make up the top.  I think all of the tops turned out nicely.  Now they are passed onto a longarm quilter to have them quilted and the binding applied.  Then the tops are brought back to the meetings where another volunteer picks up the quilt and sews the binding down and adds a label before the quilt is awarded to a veteran.

Quilts of Valor

Recently, I found out there's a quilting group for Quilts of Valor meeting close to my home at the Cape- May Lewis Ferry Terminal. I joined this past Friday, gifting them a scrappy quilt top I'd made quite a number of years ago. They'll have it quilted and it will be given to a veteran or serviceman or woman. Lots of new friends to make as there were about 50 women making quilts. One of the women came over to me and introduced herself as a quilting student as mine from 1987 when I was new to Cape May County. Pretty neat! I brought home a quilt top kit and it's together now. 

This top is actually 72" by 72" with 6 blocks across and 6 blocks down.
