North of Seattle, WA

Our idea for today was to go North of the city and visit several gardens.  Our first stop was the Washington Park Arboretum which is connected to the University of WA.  Again there were more green bushes, shrubs and tress then actual flowers blooming.  Some flowers had finished and there were none taking their place yet.  I did get to see a Varied Thrush (life bird) here along with a few Mourning Cloak butterflies.
Our next stop was A& D Peony Farms where the peonies were spectacular with over an acre of all different kinds and colors of blooms.  There were hummingbirds out and about along with Lesser Goldfinches.  It really was beautiful and we would have stayed longer if we had known our next stop was under construction.

Our next stop was the Bellevue Botanical Gardens.  When we got there while it was still open they were doing construction with heavy equipment and from outside it looked fenced off and torn up.  We talked with someone coming out who said it wasn't worth trying to see.  We developed a backup plan of walking the trail at Mercer Slough which was just a few miles away. The slough trail wasn't as birdy as I expected but it was probably the hour we were there.  Another life bird was the Spotted Towhee. (below)

We also saw these Black-capped Chickadees foraging in the curled dead leaves on the trees.  Turns out the dead leaves are the hiding spot for small caterpillers which the bird then probably feed her babies.  We saw a few Cabbage Whites and Mourning Cloaks butterflies around plus some dragonflies.
