Alaska Marine Highway - Leg 1

Off we went via bus to Bellingham, WA to start our trip on the Alaska Marine Highway.  The bus trip is about 2 hours plus a little extra due to the detour around the damaged I-5 bridge.  We arrived in good time to pick up our reserved tickets and have a bite of lunch prior to boarding at 3 PM.  I really don't know why you have to board at 3 when the boat isn't scheduled to leave until 5 PM.  We actually didn't even get away from the dock until 6PM.  We got our room assignment from the Purser and found it and stowed our bags before checking out the ship.  It was incredible to see that people were setting up to sleep in tents on both deck 6 & 8.  In my opinion deck 6 was a better option as it was under cover and there were 3 sides so only the front was open.  Deck 8 the tents are completely open to the elements.

Mount Baker, Washington

As we were cruising along we passed another great sight. Mount Baker is the most heavily glaciated of the Cascade Range volcanoes after Mount Rainier.   It  is also one of the snowiest places in the world.  In 1999 the world record for recorded snowfall in a single season - 1440 inches.
