Portage Lake and Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center

Leaving Whittier you must drive through the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel  which goes through the Begich Peak.  The tunnel was originally built in WWII as a train tunnel but a new road was built to allow the use of cars and the train in the same tunnel by carefully controlling the times each is able to use it. The tunnel was completed in 2000.  They allow both cars and trains to go through it changing every 15 minutes from cars to train and back again along with changing of directions from East to West.  The distance of the tunnel is 2.5 miles long making it the longest auto tunnel in North America
Our first stop was at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center which is a non profit organization dedicated to preserving Alaska’s wildlife through conservation, public education, and quality animal care.  They have bears, moose, coyote, elk, musk oxen, wood bison, Bald eagles and Owls among the animals.  They take sick and injured animals and rehabilitate  them to go back into the wild.  If they can't be released they are given a permanent home at the center.
